Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is speech-language therapy? Speech-language therapy is specialized assessment and intervention targeting the areas of articulation (i.e., pronunciation), receptive language (i.e., understanding what others are saying/ following directions), expressive language (i.e., ability to form words and sentences to communicate wants/needs), pragmatic language (i.e., social skills), fluency (i.e., stuttering / cluttering) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (i.e., AAC - a device that assists with communication when verbal language cannot be achieved). A speech language pathologist (i.e., SLP or speech therapist) is the preferred interventionist to address feeding and swallowing concerns as well.
2. Who can benefit from speech-language therapy? Individuals of all ages can benefit from speech-language therapy. This includes children with speech or language delays, adults who have experienced a stroke or brain injury, individuals with voice disorders, and anyone facing challenges in communication, social skills, or swallowing. Suncoast Speech Pathology serves the pediatric population exclusively at this time.
3. How do I know if my child needs speech-language therapy? If your child is not meeting developmental milestones related to speech, language, or social communication, or if others have difficulty understanding your child, it may be time to consult a speech-language therapist. Take advantage of our free discovery call and/or in-person screenings to determine if a full evaluation is warranted.
4. What should I expect during an evaluation? You will arrive at my home, be greeted at the door by me (i.e., the speech language pathologist/SLP). I will show you to the office, which is the first room upon entering the home. There will be a seat for one or two parents and room for the child to sit at a table or play on the floor (depending on age). The SLP will proceed with a parent interview about pertinent health information. After the interview, the child will be asked to perform a series of tasks such as following directions, labeling pictures and answering questions. If your child is not compliant with these tasks - DON'T WORRY - that is all part of the process. Following the assessment tasks, the SLP will share initial thoughts and answer any questions parents may have. Most assessments take around 60 minutes to complete from start to finish including parent interview and assessment tasks. After the assessment appointment, the SLP will write up her findings in a comprehensive speech-language report. If therapy is recommended, a Plan of Care will also be established which will include goals to monitor your child's progress. You will be contacted with the results in a few days time and may proceed to scheduling your first session.
5. How long does speech-language therapy take? The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual's needs, the severity of the disorder, and their progress. Some individuals may need only a few sessions, while others might benefit from ongoing therapy over several months or even years. Sessions are typically in 30 minute or 60 minute increments.
6. What techniques are used in speech-language therapy? Techniques vary depending on the specific needs of the client but may include exercises to improve articulation, language comprehension and expression activities, social communication strategies, voice therapy, and swallowing exercises. At Suncoast Speech Pathology, to keep children engaged, therapy sessions include interactive activities and fun, stimulating games. Silliness and being unexpected is another way the SLP might keep a child attentive to therapy tasks.
7. How can I support my child's progress at home? Your therapist will provide strategies and activities you can do at home to reinforce the skills learned in therapy. Consistent practice and positive reinforcement are key to helping your child make progress.
8. Do you accept insurance? We accept medicaid and also are a Step Up for Students provider, which means you can use scholarship funds to pay for therapy. Please contact us to inquire about rates, our private pay rates are among the lowest in the county.
9. How do I schedule an appointment? You can schedule an appointment by contacting us via phone call, text, or email. We will work with you to find a convenient time for your evaluation or therapy sessions.
10. What should I bring to my first appointment? Please bring any relevant medical records and previous evaluations. For children, it may also be helpful to bring a list of developmental milestones or concerns. A water bottle is recommended as well.
11. How often are therapy sessions? The frequency of therapy sessions depends on the individual's needs. Most clients may attend sessions once a week, while others may require more frequent visits. Bi-monthly appointments are also an option in some cases. The therapist will recommend a schedule based on the evaluation results.
12. Can therapy sessions be conducted online? Yes, we offer teletherapy sessions for those who require remote services. Online therapy is a convenient option but it is not appropriate for every client. The therapist will determine if teletherapy is appropriate on a case by case basis.
13. What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment? If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. We require at least 24 hours notice to avoid a cancellation fee.
14. Do you offer group therapy sessions? We offer sibling communication sessions at this time. If you are interested in a group session for your child to address social interaction, that can be arranged.
15. Can parents sit in on their child’s therapy sessions? Absolutely. We encourage parents to be involved in their child's therapy process. Observing sessions can help you understand the techniques being used and how to implement them at home. An integral part of therapy is parent follow-through at home. Without the home practice, progress will likely be slow. Be prepared to be trained and provided homework at each session.
16. What languages do you offer therapy in? We provide therapy in English at this time.
